Meet Sarah from Left The Right Coast
When Sarah, of Left The Right Coast, and her family felt determined to move out of their rental due to a difficult landlord, she takes a leap of faith to embrace the RV lifestyle with her large family, including two autistic sons, only to find herself unexpectedly embracing the freedom and flexibility of the open road.
“RV life works for us because we’re able to travel but still give them that stability that they need – it’s been a great way to experience freedom and flexibility while still providing continuity for our family.”
Sarah is a full-time RV family of ten, who left their home in the San Diego area in 2020 to travel the country. They have been to many places, including North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Idaho, and Minnesota, and have been living in their RV since September 2020.
More About This Episode:
Sarah and her family were fed up with the unfairness of their rental situation and decided to take a chance on RV life. They purchased an OLD camper and drove cross country to attend a family reunion. After the reunion, they were hooked and decided to upgrade to a travel trailer. When the pandemic hit and their lease was ending, they took it as a sign and sold their house to embark on full-time RV life.
Despite having to fix their RV multiple times and facing many obstacles along their journey, their RV life has been incredibly rewarding. They’ve been able to connect with locals and explore places they never imagined they would love. With an eight bed bunk room in their new-to-them fifth wheel, they have a sense of stability and the freedom to go anywhere they please. Now, Sarah and her family are looking forward to a little bit of stationary life and a little bit of travel.

Chapter Summaries:
[00:00:00]
There’s a lot of emphasis on free range parenting and home schooling. This was something that for me, made me almost not want to do it. If you don’t feel like you fit in that box, maybe you shouldn’t be out there.
[00:00:34]
Welcome to the Morris sunsets please podcast. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live debt free, sell it all and live small? These are just some of the stories of those who have jumped outside the box and living life on their terms.
[00:01:06]
A family from San Diego decided to go full time RV life in September of 2020. The family has been traveling across the country since then. They’ve had some extended trips, but the longest one is probably three or four months long.
[00:06:46]
So how many kids are you traveling with right now or traveling with? Living with seven. And you guys all fit in one RV? We have an eight bed bunk room. The ones that hold the most are the unicorn campers.
[00:07:21]
Two autistic boys have a hard time being in new places. For them, the RV is just home and they have the same bed every night. RV life works out really well for us because we’re able to travel but still give them that stability.
[00:09:01]
How did you know once you hit the road or moved into the RV that you knew this was the right path? Our favorite part of RV life has been getting to kind of hang out with locals and seeing places that we thought we would love. We enjoy the flexibility and being able to just up and go.
[00:13:55]
RV life has taken the fear out of many of our worries. Our kids sometimes have no idea where we’ve been. It taught us that you can worry about the things but you really can’t do anything about it. It also taught us to be more vigilant on having a savings account.
[00:17:38]
It wasn’t really an adjustment for us because my husband had been working from home for a while. But when you get into having teenagers, there’s a lot of big feelings there in a very small space. It’s been nice to give everybody a little break.
[00:22:37]
The wrong axles were put on our rig. It’s riding on two 6000 pound axles. And we only have £1000 cargo carrying capacity. That was probably our lowest point. But since then, we took out a lot of weight.
[00:25:47]
Last year, we were able to experience spring absolutely everywhere. This was the first time that I felt like even. though we did have some mechanical problems, we had kind of hit our stride. That means everything is fresh and new everywhere you went.
[00:27:23]
The triplets have autism and need constant supervision. Do you think you’ll continue RVing indefinitely? If you did settle down, would it be in California or Arizona?
[00:31:52]
The whole purpose of this podcast is to inspire other people to live outside of the box. What advice would you give to encourage them to liveoutside the box? Just follow your gut and don’t be scared of making those changes.
[00:37:20]
When you’ve been bitten by the travel bug, you can’t let it go. Just go somewhere. See something awesome, tingly feeling that’s so exciting exploring somewhere new. You might not have tomorrow to be able to go.
[00:45:05]
For us, while free range parenting, that sounds great, we can’t do that. They have to be physically attached to a caregiver at all times. But it’s hard to share those moments because it doesn’t seem instagram worthy. And I feel like that’s something about social media that needs to change.
[00:46:15]
Parents worried about traveling with kids on the spectrum or with any sort of special needs. If you’re not completely ready to make that huge leap into full time, start by going for longer trips. Don’t be afraid to just get out there for your kids.
