Are you a fellow parents diving into the quest for financial freedom? Let me tell you about a book that’s more than just a guide to money; it’s a game-changer: Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover. If you’ve been on the debt rollercoaster while chasing the American dream, this book could be your beacon to escape the financial maze.
My History With This Book, The Total Money Makeover
To give you a better understanding of why this book is of importance in my life and how it could help you going forward, we have to take a walk down memory lane…
Flashback to Dad’s Advice
I remember when my Dad earnestly insisted that I read this book – The Total Money Makeover. Back then, wrestling with the complexities of adulting felt akin to deciphering a complex puzzle. Little did I realize then that this book would evolve into my financial guidebook, offering a roadmap out of the chaos of debt.
The Debt Trap
Marriage often introduces its share of “normal” debts, compelling us to grind constantly, looking to gain more work to pay off the debts. The perpetual cycle of living paycheck to paycheck soon became our unwelcome reality, with bills playing a relentless game of catch-up. Perhaps this scenario feels all too familiar to you as well?
The Ramsey Revelation
It was in 2019 that I stumbled upon Ramsey’s podcast, I couldn’t even tell you how I found it… Hearing stories of individuals triumphing over overwhelming debts in record time was beyond inspiring! It would bring me to tears so many times listening to their similar stories to ours. It was then that the realization dawned upon me: Dad’s recommendation might just hold the key breaking out of this never-ending debt cycle.
Taking the Baby Steps
Fueled by sheer excitement and feeling so inspired, I chatted with my husband, Mike, explaining that this book held the steps to our financial freedom. Embracing Ramsey’s “baby steps,” the excitement of saving our first $1000 outside our retirement funds was like scaling a towering mountain peak that we never thought was possible, signifying our commitment to change.
2020: A Year of Turmoil and Transformation
Then, amidst the chaos of a year that 2020 was, upheavals shook our stability. Layoffs and the unknown shattered the balance we had just found, sending us back to square one. But not forgetting the teachings of Ramsey, we made a daring decision. We let go of everything and embraced a life untethered from debt. It has been a liberating experience and one that keeps showing its head as to why we need to be debt free.
Going Forward
This has probably been 100% the biggest saving grace for us, especially over the last three years of unknown. If it weren’t for making the decision to leave Canada with ZERO debts, we would have had a very different story by this point.
Does this mean we will NEVER have debt, no. We do plan to purchase land/house at some and at these rates, a mortgage will be needed. That said, we won’t be buying as large of a mortgage as we once had leaving us no room for lower income periods.
Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
But let’s talk about the book itself—this isn’t your typical financial guide. Ramsey’s approach feels like a friend sitting across from you, simplifying complicated financial jargon. It’s all about practical steps, from creating an emergency fund to obliterating debt and ensuring money works for you—not the other way around.
The Total Money Makeover lays out a structured plan through its seven baby steps, beginning with saving a starter emergency fund, then aggressively paying off debts using the debt snowball method, and eventually building wealth and giving generously.
Ramsey’s no-nonsense advice isn’t just about managing money; it’s a mindset shift. It challenges conventional beliefs about borrowing and leveraging debt, emphasizing the power of financial discipline and delayed gratification.
The book doesn’t just preach—it illustrates real-life success stories, regular people who’ve followed Ramsey’s principles and transformed their financial lives. These stories serve as motivation, showing that financial freedom is attainable with dedication and commitment.
One thing that stands out is how Ramsey prioritizes the psychological aspect of money management. It’s not just about numbers and budgets; it’s about changing behaviors, breaking bad money habits, and instilling discipline to achieve lasting financial security.
