We were just another family chasing that “American dream”. Nothing seemed to be enough. It became a time-suck of spending every day managing our stuff and our time. The basement needed to be reorganized and cleaned out every month, the kids always wanted the latest electronics or toy and we were racing from event to event. To others, it looked like we had it all and had it all together, when in truth, we used everything to create that fun and exciting – new and shiny – feeling.
We always had grand dreams of buying another house here or buying land there, traveling to far off places, but our home commitments and budget never seemed to line up.
Then 2020 hit.
The shock of 2020 was a rude awakening to limitations and our ticking clock here on earth.
When we lost my dad in May of 2020. He had always reminded me to just get out there and live! After all, he was given 8 years after a life debilitating accident making him a quadriplegic. He always said that his life wasn’t ruined, it redefined what he needed to do and his purpose. This reminded us that WE really needed to redefine our purpose as a couple, as parents and as a family.
But what could we do?
We knew we needed to make some changes. Based on the current affairs of the time in Canada, we opted to look at finding a way to be in the US. With the cost of housing skyrocketing, we needed a smaller solution. While listening to podcast during my drives, I learned about an RV School in Texas. After talking about it, we thought this was the best way to make a plan to get on the road. The push we needed even more.
But we had to sell our house?! What about our stuff?
We had a hard date for school starting and we needed to have our ‘road day’ in pen. May 28, 2021 was the day we closed on our house and May 29, 2021 we crossed the border.
Once we knew what our plans we, everything started moving, and fast!
We needed to list our house right away to get our close before we were set to leave. The house listed and sold within a day. We closed a whopping 1 month later.
Now the real work began.
We had to downsize as much as we could! During that month, we decluttered, sold, donated and packed up ever single item we owned. What we knew we couldn’t take with us, we packed into a little 10×5 storage unit. (including items we couldn’t donate as donation centers were still closed).
Time came to hit the road, and the rest is history.
What we didn’t realize, is just how much we would love traveling. We can’t wait to get on the road again and start planning the next routes.
If you’re ever wondering what you’re doing in life, what is your real purpose – that little idea in the back of your mind, might just lead to where you’re supposed to be. Try digging a little deeper and see what comes of it and it might just be what your purpose is.
